Iliad 24, line 27 - how to translate ὥς?

Post by Phoebus Apollo »

I'm struggling to see the best way to translate ὥς - my dictionary says that ὡς (without the accent) means 'as, just as', but ὥς (the one with the accent, which is what is used here) means 'so, thus, in this way'. It makes more sense to me to translate it like the former (just as) - 'but they persisted, just as (when) at first/in the beginning sacred Ilium was/became hated by them'; is this an okay translation?

It's ὡς, "just as", but here it bears an accent because it's followed by enclitic σφιν.

ἔχον here probably means "were": "they were [in the same frame of mind, i.e., hostile] as when . . . "

I note that both Gaza and Psellos render it with ὥσπερ.
