New Latin-only IRC chat (Instant Messaging)

Post by Godmy »

Sī quis vestrum mēcum et cum aliīs amīcīs meīs Latīnē loquī velit, 'chat' nostrum novum generis IRC adeat!
Per litterās loquimur, at in 'tempore praesentī' (ut vulgō 'in real time' dīcitur) omnia aguntur.

http://latinitas.linguax.com hīc legite plūra

Linguae vernāculae/hodiearnae in sermōnē omnīno interdīcuntur, prohibentur, vetantur!

If you would like to chat (by writing) in Latin only and with all vernacular languages prohibited (i.e. practically anything but Latin) we have just made with few friends a new IRC channel where you can do that. (IRC is a type of network to which you can connect by an IRC program, so called "client" of your choice and each network contains thousands of channels (= rooms) about various subjects).

http://latinitas.linguax.com - read more information about the chat at this link.

Absolute beginners in Latin are however not invited (those who almost don't know a word, those who have no idea about declensions and conjugations or do not remember them yet, those who have very little idea about some Latin grammar and the way Latin sentences are composed, and so on).

We require that you can make at least simple grammatical and comprehensible Latin sentences (at least very simple; for example by having read Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata or Assimil). If you are uncertain about the vocabulary used for various terms from the modern real-life, fear not! That you will learn very quickly simply by exchanging messages with us: and this is how it works in the real life with any language that is spoken (written in this case).

That doesn't mean that beginners in Latin writing are not invited! If you have spent more time of your life rather by reading Latin, you are most invited! You will know instinctively which Latin sentence is grammatical and which is not by combining and inventing and you will learn how to communicate (and also get better in Latin composition, in an instant translation of your thoughts: and therefore also more competent passively In Latin [not just actively] - writing is a great way how to get the language to your blood even more!).

You may ask why to make a new chat when there are such projects as 'schola.ning'. It is because we wanted something that is technically more comfortable, adjustable, adaptable for the user, something that doesn't necessarily interfere with your web browser.

Chats that are purely web-based (as schola.ning - or the new address it has now) are usually technically a bit slow (maybe even sluggish), you cannot adjust the window as you want, it is less reliable, you cannot change fonts, you cannot change the background (if you are 'a creature of a night' like me and you like to type on a black background) and an IRC client you connect with simply gives you all of that you cannot do at these web-chats.
Because IRC itself is just a network = a place on the internet to which you connect by a program (an IRC client) of your choice. And almost every IRC client has very wide options how the chat window can be customized.
Also a chatting program is usually much less prone to errors and crashing than a chat that runs in your web browser which you use for thousands of different things.

So please come if you are interested!

Alternatively, if you are interested in an IRC channel where you can speak lively about Latin in English, follow the last post here http://www.textkit.com/greek-latin-foru ... 06#p185306
