Contracted verbs

Post by Banana tree »

Hey all.

I have quick question about contracted εω-verbs. I am trying to figure out the paradigm for κοσμεω, I have found all forms and verified them against Perseus word study tool except for first person plural. It is κοσμεομεν without the contraction therefore it should be κοσμουμεν, ε+ο=ου right? So why is it so that I get no matches when I search for it with Perseus word study tool (http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/mor ... n&la=greek)?

I think it's because some forms simply exist "in theory", only within the verb paradigm
(at least in terms of the works that are accessible to us today). Although I did find one instance of
1st pl. as compound and one instance as non-compound but only in later writers.
Nate.

Perseus is a wonderful resource, but hosts only a very small fraction of Greek literature. A search of the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae finds 11 occurrences in 8 authors, none earlier than the 2nd century AD or later than the 12th century.

Right thanks. Could someone then just verify that I have conjugated it correctly?

1s κοσμῶ
2s κοσμεῖς
3s κοσμεῖν
1p κοσμοῦμεν
2p κοσμεῖτε
3p κοσμοῦσι

1s κοσμοῦμαι
2s κοσμῇ
3s κοσμεῖται
1p κοσμοῦμεθα
2p κοσμεῖσθε
3p κοσμοῦνται

Sorry for this question but I just wanna make sure that I get this right since I apparently can't check all forms with Perseus. Thanks in advance.

Except 3rd sg. act. is κοσμεῖ. There's no ν in pres. ind. act. 3rd. sg.

Also the 1p mp should have the acute accent κοσμούμεθα.
