Transitioning Between Dialects

After I get my Latin to a satisfactory level, I'm considering learning Greek. Both Homer and the Attic authors interest me. As I read many of the forum posts, I notice that learning Homeric Greek 1st with texts such as Pharr is often recomended. A minority advocate starting with Attic Greek.

I'll shop for texts before I start. If I begin with one dialect, what texts and tools are used to accomplish the transition after I learn one dialect then switch to another?
