In his editions of Plato he recurs sometimes to other grammar books and materials which he abbreviated in the way I can't always understand, for instance, if S stands for Smyth's grammar, what is GP?

Steadman normally includes a table of abbreviations. If you are using a PDF version of one his texts, you might have missed it.
