I think we're all very glad to hear you're progressing well in your recovery, Malo. Take it one day at a time and hopefully each new day will be better than the last.

That seems like great progress. One day at a time as Aetos says.

Take care!

I can sip water, with difficulty because half my tongue was cut away. Problem is, I also have some phlegm.

The tongue parts, and lymph nodes cut off from me were being biopsied so as to determine if cancer had spread. Results...tomorrow.

...God. I need to learn to sip thru a straw, without choking because the water went down the wrong way and ended in my lungs. And being afraid I would choke because of my saliva.

...next year, I will have a tongue reconstruction surgery, Mama promised. Just get thru this one first.

We'll pray for good news. Recovery is not easy, but Malo, there is one blessing you can count already: you have a mother who cares for you and will always be with you.

Well, something went wrong.

Had breathing problem, thought it was solved then BOOM! High Fever. More CoVid tests, referral to an Infectious diseases specialist, x-ray scan of chest, back on IV because of heavy pus leaking stitches, had to use a nebulizer to get rid of phlegm.

Not getting out of here quickly damn it. And this hospital? It's like a show of Looney Tunes when it comes to the nurses and doctors.

...the actual Looney Tunes might be even better, come to think of it. Bugs Bunny has godlike powers.

I'm at home.

Sweet, sweet home. And recovering. The one hole in my stitches where pus is draining is no longer doing so frequently and has gotten smaller. God I hope I recover faster so everything could go back faster to normal.

As it is, my speech is...half intelligible. My God, I'm practicing talking more to adapt to this new reality.

Good news.

Doctor said that with my stitches healing well, and no pus coming out anywhere, I can try sipping water this week. If I can do that and graduate to milk, the NGT tube can be taken out next week and next next week I can start radiation therapy.

And in other news, trying to answer the next exercise, but can't finish because of headache brought about by muscle pains caused by a lack of head movement, according to the doctor.

Damn, I wanna continue.

Hi Malo,
Good to hear you're healing well. Assuming mobility is a bit of a problem, I've been looking for some online resources for Athenaze and it turns out OUP*USA has a learning resources site with exercises matching the lessons:

https://global.oup.com/us/companion.web ... ch3/quiz1a

It's based on the 3rd edition, but from what I've read there's not a great deal of difference between the 2nd and 3rd editions, so if you've completed the lessons in the 2nd edition, you should be able to do the quizzes in the student resources. The quizzes are pretty basic, consisting of vocabulary and forms questions, but they'll help you maintain what you've already learned.

I found some Athenaze study resources as well at Cornell College's Ancient Greek Links:

https://www.cornellcollege.edu/classica ... inks.shtml

Some exercises require a browser/viewer which I don't seem to have, but there are still plenty of exercises to keep one busy.

Ok. Slept enough, finally got Biogesic tablets. Will attempt to drink water by mouth later this day. Wish me success.

Both the master and the slave they walk towards the field.

The slave carries the plow, the master drives the oxen.

When they go towards the field, the oxen no longer walk.

Then the master call them and he says "Don't stay, o oxen, but hurry into the field."

The oxen still stayed.

So then the master he calls the slave and he says, "Come here, o Xanthias and help. For the oxen they stay, and it is not possible to drive them into the field."

So then the slave went towards and he says "But it is possible. Look," and he goads the oxen.

So they no longer stay but they hurry into the field.

1. What are the master and the slave doing?
They were both going into the field.

2. What happens when they approach the field?
The oxen stopped walking.

3. What does the master do and with what result?
The master calls out to the oxen to hurry into the field to no avail.

4. What does the master do in his helplessness?
He calls Xanthias to help him.

5. What does the slave do that the master didn't do? With what result?
The slave goads the oxen, and the oxen went into the field.

Hi Malo,
The answers look good.

There's no need for "they" in translating this sentence. βαδίζουσι simply applies to the two men, both master and slave.

You do a nice job of translating the sentences. Something you should also do even at this early stage, is try to answer the questions before actively translating them. ΟΙ ΒΟΕΣ is really a comprehension exercise as opposed to a translation exercise, the main idea being to read the Greek as Greek and not as Greek decoded into English. Even with the regular reading selections you can try to do this. See how much you understand before you translate. One way of doing this is to form a mental picture that corresponds to the words you are learning. Picture the δεσπότης standing with his oxen, the δοῦλος carrying a plow, Then picture them walking, the master in front the slave following. Picture the field with its large open area of brown earth. Something I like to do when looking up words I don't know the meaning of (especially the names of plants, trees, cities I've never seen, etc.)is to find pictures of those things and if it's a city, its location on a topographical map as well as pictures of it. When I first started learning modern Greek (I was ten at the time), my first book, a primer, had no English in it whatsoever, but at the top of each page was a lovely picture that contained images of each word in the text, so rather than associating a new word with an English word, I was associating it with the visual image before me.

Keep up the good work and be careful with that Biogesic. It's better for your stomach and your liver than ibuprofen, but it needs to be taken exactly as the doctor orders.

The NGT tube is taken off this day. I can now start eating and drinking through my mouth again. But only liquids and very soft foods for now.

Will also start Radiation therapy soon. 35 sessions. And got another medicine for my headache plus muscle relaxant to enable me to move the muscles enough to start exercising said muscles.

I miss being able to read Attic.

Glad to hear you're making progress! Do try to review what you've already done so that when you're healthy enough to carry on, you'll remember what you've already covered.

Ok. Started radiation therapy this day.

It was a strange, uncomfortable experience.

Hopefully by the end of the therapy I can start learning Attic again just by having the clear presence of mind to be able to study or write.

Malo, your health is the most important issue right now. We'll be here when you're ready to resume! In the meantime, there's an app called "Ancient Greek" from Liberation Philology that you can use to drill yourself on forms and it's available for IPhones and Android based phones:
http://www.libphil.ca/ancient-greek.php

Ok. Trying to resume in my spare time. But taking it a bit slow.

I got a question regarding the table in Chapter 4A, about φιλε. Is the Imperative of φιλε supposed to be written φίλε instead of φιλέ like the other examples are? Or is that a misprint?

Hi Malo,
My table doesn't show the imperatives, but the imperative of φιλέω=φιλῶ is φίλει, not φίλε. φίλε is the vocative singular of the noun φίλος, ου, ὁ. Check pages 12 and 22 and the the reference grammar.

Ok. Latest update on what's happening with me.

I got one last radiation therapy remaining. Supposed to be this day, when there is this supertyphoon hitting the Philippines suddenly and my house is flooded up to belly button level.

What's worse, I fainted this day due to...I don't know. Hunger? Too much laying on the bed and suddenly getting up? Whatever it is, it was scary since my mother told me I literally collapsed unconscious headfirst into my bed, and my favorite mug that I had been taking care of for years shattered on the ground.

I...I feel so bitter about that.

Please pray for me.

...God I wish I ca go back to trying to study Attic again.

First Goni, now Vamco! One can only hope that the typhoon season will be over soon. Sorry to hear about the fainting spell. Hopefully, as you become more active that will be less of a concern and when you're ready to resume your studies, we'll be here. Good luck and may God be with you, Ralph.

Yesterday was my last radiation therapy session.

Yehey! I graduated from radiation therapy.

In 2 weeks I will be back to get an MRI or CT scan to see if I still have cancer.

God please let me be healed.

You will get through this, Ralph. It will take time and there will be setbacks, but in the end, all you can do is take one day at a time and make the most of it. As Seneca says, we are thinking of you and hope for your complete recovery.
