sine, quaeso, inspiciam

Post by Jim Bryan »

sine, quaeso, inspiciam (Dialog 01 Otto et Petrus) ( Otto cultellum amisit et rogat Petrum ut liceat eius cultello uti.) source?

From the context this must mean something like
"But may I please inspect it?"

But I can't find "sine" in the dictionary. Maybe sin + ne?

Thank you
Jim

sine imperative, with subjunctive inspiciam, “let me look”. quaeso independent, “I beg (you).”

I find William Whitaker's Words program helpful when I don't know the correct headword (dictionary lookup word). An online version of Words is accessible here:

https://latin.ucant.org/

For your word, here is the output, which shows that there is still some work needed to pick out the proper dictionary word.

sin.e N 2 1 VOC S M
sinus, sini N (2nd) M [XXXAX]
bowl for serving wine, etc;
sin.e V 3 1 PRES ACTIVE IMP 2 S
sino, sinere, sivi, situs V (3rd) [XXXAX]
allow, permit;
sine PREP ABL
sine PREP ABL [XXXAX]
without; (sometimes after object); lack; [Johannis sine Terra => John Lackland]

The Perseus Latin Word Study Tool does this work also: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/morph?la=la

An Android app for Words that works offline is available on Google Play. AFAIK the iphone app works online-only. Both are free. A google search will probably let you find downloadable computer forms of William Whitaker's Words.

Thanks friends. Once you have your mind made up...si ne....
And if you have the SPQR app, The Parser is Whitiker's words.
"Let me look, please" makes so much sense. sino isn't in my working vocabulary YET :-)
