Is this a correct translation?

Post by Propertius »

Title says it all; here’s the sentence, first in English, then my translation of it in Latin.

My love for you will last forever.

Amor meus tibi sempiternus durabit.

I also want to translate this into Latin.

You’re no one’s queen but mine.

Here’s my translation, but I feel that I may be wrong:

Regina neminis nisi mea es.

My first guess was to use sed instead of nisi. Am I right in saying that that sentence wouldn’t make sense if I used sed instead of nisi?

Anyone? I’d appreciate a response.

Multas gratias vobis ago.

My sense of it would be:

Meus amor tui perpetuo permanebit (or maybe the present permanet would sound a a little better). I think there are multiple ways to express this, but you definitely need an objective genitive with amor.

Nisi works nicely. But here I want to use the dative, nemini and mihi, "you are queen to no one except to me."

I don't see anything obviously wrong, except that neminis is frowned upon by the Ciceronian Police, who prescribe nullius.

My love for you will last forever.
Amor tui mihi semper durabit.
or (better)
Te amo, te semper amabo.

(“You’re no one’s queen but mine” is far from flattering and in Latin is simply ridiculous.)

I am sure Juvenal would have come up with something witty. :D
Persuade tibi hoc sic esse, ut scribo: quaedam tempora eripiuntur nobis, quaedam subducuntur, quaedam effluunt. Turpissima tamen est iactura, quae per neglegentiam fit. Et si volueris attendere, maxima pars vitae elabitur male agentibus, magna nihil agentibus, tota vita aliud agentibus.
