Very nice example there! I am researching how these things were made in ancient times and making my own replicas, so thanks for that! I recall that the Latin textbook we used in grade school said they had the more open "gladiator" type of sandals which you can find modern examples of for sale online, and then more formal made from a large piece of decorative leather such as this, which one would wear to more special events, shoes that covered the whole foot, if you had more money you'd have more decorative shoes, whereas the regular sandals were for wearing around the home and in the garden, or informal places. But I am still looking into these things!
