Song of Songs (gender question)

Post by LyleBright »

Inveni quem diligit anima mea

Is spoken by a woman to a man.

Is it correct to say:

Inveni quis diligit anima mea

If such would be spoken by a man to a woman?

The feminine equivalent of quem is quam. “I have found whom my soul loves”—quem if a male, quam if a female. As far as the Latin goes, the speaker could be either female or male.

There is no indication in the phrase of the gender of the person being addressed either.
τί δὲ ἀγαθὸν τῇ πομφόλυγι συνεστώσῃ ἢ κακὸν διαλυθείσῃ;
