New online: Shakespeare's Julius Caesar

Post by Carolus Raeticus »

Salvete omnes!

I am proud to announce that my transcription of the Shakespeare-drama Julius Caesar (Latin translation by Henricus Denison) is now online. I donated it to Project Gutenberg to ensure its continued existence on the Web.

Valete,

Carolus Raeticus

Wow! That's incredible! I didn't even know* these translations exist.

You have done a truly praiseworthy job! :)

Salve Godmy!

Thank you, Godmy.

Thank you. Strangely enough, this is not the only translation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Another translation was made by one C.W. Goodchild. It was published as a serial in the Latin magazine Praeco Latinus edited by Arcadius Avellanus, with the last instalment being Vol. 1, Numerus 11. However, due to Vol. 4 not being available online (and with Vol. 5, Numerus 1 the drama already having reached Act II, Scene I), the entire translation is not available right now (at least to my knowledge). Hopefully, some day Vol. 1 and 4 will be scanned and uploaded for ready access to all.

Vale,

Carolus Raeticus

Stephanus Shakesperi lectoribus spd.

Magnas tibi ago gratias, Carole, pro laboribus!

Quaerens frustra fabulam scaenicam de Caesare translatam a Goodchild, hanc in senarios a T. J. Hilgers inveni. Nescio quae sit melior. Me pauca legente, praestat Hilgers.

Well, honor is the subject of my story.
I cannot tell what you and other men
Think of this life; but, for my single self,
I had as lief not be as live to be
In awe of such a thing as I myself. (1.2.92-96)

Age vero; honor sermonis nostri argumentum esto. Quid nimirum tu et populares nostri de hac vivendi conditione censeant non satis scio; sed, quod ad me attinet, malim omnino non vivere, quam ita vivere, ut alium quemvis, mihi ipsi similem et æqualem, continue pertimescam. (Denison)

Age, est sermonis argumentum honor mei!
Quid tu, quid alii de vita hace sentiant
Nequeo autumare; me solum quod attinet
Non esse tam libenter vellem, quam metu
Rei esse talis captum, qualis ego ipse sum. (Hilgers)

Quid censetis?

Vale(te)
