Introducing myself

Post by smitterle »

I'm Sebastian.
I found this forum because I had a question around Ionic pronunciation of Homer.
My background is that I had many years Latin at school and loved it and somehow ended up learning some Ancient Greek, too. At university, however, I switched to maths and German philology and finally started working as a software engineer.
Two years ago, I read James Clackson, Language and Society in the Greek and Roman Worlds. Since then I haven't stopped reading about the ancient world, and I picked up language studies again.
I'm a bit more interested in Greek because it's what I learned less back then, I guess. I also felt that my high school teachers had betrayed me somehow because in 7 years of Latin, not a single word about bilingual Rome and Roman Empire was spoken. I had inherited my Latin teacher's Bornemann with the words "I never liked to study Greek but it was mandatory for Latin." If Latin was called a dead language, Greek was destined to another universe.
But Greek is so rich! So many linguistic varieties and concepts!
One of my goals is to finish Homer's first book of the Iliad soon and then start with Classic/Attic Greek.
