LSJ Recommendation or Anything Else

Post by Lukas »

Χαίρετε!

I hope this is the right area to place this thread in.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an LSJ or some other Greek dictionary? If I enter "LSJ " into Amazon, I have a lot of choices of different editions. I prefer a paper format, as paper is easier on the eyes than the Internet. If the book allows both looking up in the book and searching at the Internet site, that would be fine.

This is LSJ:

https://www.amazon.com/Greek-English-Le ... 381&sr=8-5

You can probably find it second hand too.

You can access it on line here:

https://logeion.uchicago.edu/χαίρω

A more suitable lexicon for you would be "Middle Liddell" (An Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon: Founded upon the Seventh Edition of Liddell and Scott's Greek-English Lexicon).

This has all the words you need to read most classical texts. You can pick up a second hand copy on say Abe books. Not sure if its still being printed.

You can look here https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Search ... _-srp-_-hc

If you want a big dictionary an alternative is the Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brill-Dictiona ... oks&sr=1-1

I like this dictionary but some here don't for good and bad reasons.
Persuade tibi hoc sic esse, ut scribo: quaedam tempora eripiuntur nobis, quaedam subducuntur, quaedam effluunt. Turpissima tamen est iactura, quae per neglegentiam fit. Et si volueris attendere, maxima pars vitae elabitur male agentibus, magna nihil agentibus, tota vita aliud agentibus.

Seneca's recommendation is excellent. Also, I have been using BrillDAG along with the LSJ. I find it functions better more as an intermediate lexicon comparable to Middle Liddell. And yes, I'm familiar with some of the criticisms about it that have been shared here.

I'd like to back this up. The Middle Liddell is more user friendly and a good choice for a first Greek-English lexicon (if you're a native speaker of English). A quick search on Amazon showed that it is still in print and not terribly expensive. LSJ is of course the professional choice but may have some pitfalls for intermediate learners.
