Disney's "How Far I'll Go" in Latin (Comments/Critiques Encouraged)

This board is a composition workshop, like a writers' workshop: post your work with questions about style or vocabulary, comment on other people's work, post composition challenges on some topic or form, or just dazzle us with your inventive use of galliambics.

Disney's "How Far I'll Go" in Latin (Comments/Critiques Encouraged)

Post by Gregorius »

I'm back with another Disney song translation/adaptation, this time the flagship tune from Moana!
As always, I concerned myself mainly with fitting the rhyme scheme and number of syllables per line, all the while being as faithful to the original meaning as possible under those constraints. No attempt was made to adhere to classical Roman meter, though I did try to align stress wherever I felt I could as well as match particularly long notes with long vowels. I welcome any questions, suggestions, or even outright corrections, since I'm mostly self-taught, and this is probably not the final draft.

Contemplāta
Mar' extrēmum sum tam diū,
It' ā prīmā memoriā,
Causam ignorāns semper.
Volō
Esse fīlia iam dīvīna,
Sed mē distrahunt marīna,
Quamvīs ēnixim cōner.

Quisque callis quem
Eg' umquam sequor,
Quisque gradus quem
Eg' umquam gradior
Mē redūcit ad
Locum mirum, at
Mī vetātus est.

Margō quā mare caelum tangit
Mē clāmat.
Distantiam nōn
Scit hīc nēmō.
Sī manēbit post mē ventus hic,
Illa clāra
Mī fiet ergō.
Quōdam diē sciam tandem quam longē eam tum!

Sapiō omnēs istōs insulānōs
In hāc insulā vidērī
Tam fēlīcēs vītīs suīs.
Sapiō omnēs istōs insulānōs
In hāc insulā vidērī
Tam ratōs in officiīs suīs.

Fortass' obsequī
Meō possim iam,
Etiam ferre sīc
Gentī glōriam.
Sed sunt dubia, nam
Vox interna mī
Dīcit, "Certē nōn!"

Lūx quae saltat in marī splendēns
Mē caecat.
Candōrem nōn
Scit hīc nēmō.
Et vidētur vocāre tamen mē.
Nunc mē quaer' et
Mī dīc ergō
Quid adsit praeter
Istam marginem.

Margō quā mare caelum tangit
Mē clāmat.
Distantiam nōn
Scit hīc nēmō.
Sī manēbit post mē ventus hic,
Illa clāra
Mī fiet ergō,
Et tunc ībō!
