JUICE: Latin goes to Space

Post by Carolus Raeticus »

Salvete!

Today I stumbled upon an article, according to which part of Galileo's Sidereus Nuncius is used in a commemorative plaque on ESA’s space probe Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer ("Juice"), the original Latin text, mind you. The actual pages (from one of the first 550 ever printed in 1610) can be seen here.

The plaque itself is very dark, probably for some technical reason, but the design is recognizable in the fifth image of this article's gallery.

Nice to know, that a piece of Latin culture is going into space.

Valete,
